A Guide To Cat 5 Cables

Cat 5 is the abbreviated name for category 5 cables, also known as ethernet cables, which are twisted pair cables that are used mainly for networking and telephony applications, though they do have other uses too. Although cat 5 cables have now been superseded by cat 5e, they are still used extensively all over the world. Category 5 cables are basically made up of eight unshielded gauge copper wires paired up in a color coded designation, and then terminated with either an 8P8C or RJ-four5 connector. Other uses for cat 5 cables include communicating audio and video data and asynchronous transfer mode, commonly abbreviated to ATM.

The most common form of cat 5 cable contains four pairs of cables which are color coded to a standardized key. The color scheme uses green, orange, brown and blue with the pairs of these colors using white sheaths with the associating colored stripes. Contrary to popular belief, the name cat 5 only refers to the internal wiring scheme of the cable and therefore cables can include a large number of internal wires, one example is in backbone systems where cat 5 cables can include over one hundred pairs of wires. Internally, cat 5 cables must be twisted by a specific amount to minimize crosstalk between each pair of wires.

Cat 3 cables were used prior to the development of cat 5, though cat 3 was only able to transmit and receive a maximum of ten megabits per second of data, and cat 5 is able to communicate more than ten times that. One limit to cat 5 cables is the maximum length, as at around one hundred meters, the signal loss through increases dramatically and so with fixed installations, a maximum cat 5 cable length of ninety meters is advised, with a five meter length of patch cable at each end, unless a repeater is installed to boost the signal.

There is a common misconception that the connectors terminating cat 5 cables are RJ-four5 connectors. While this is not strictly false, 8P8C connectors are also used to terminate cat 5 cables and the difference between the two cables is hard to spot by looking at them. All certified cat 5 cables will have printed information on the cable explaining the type of cable and the connectors used.

With regards to cat 5 cables with four pairs of internal wires, used in telephony and computer network data transfer, there are three types of cat 5 cable wiring. These types of wiring are straight cable (used to link a PC with a switch of some sort), crossover (used to link two computers together), and roll-over (used to link a PC with a router).
